Fall Flavors that help your Skin Shine

Apples

There’s a reason why these delicious fall favorites keep the doctor away! They’re packed with the fiber to help keep your system regular. The more you detox, the clearer your skin will be. Apple cider vinegar especially helps to balance out your skin’s pH level and blocks out pathogens and oil. We use it in our Harmonizing Citrus Cleanse for this reason as well as to support hydration and anti-aging. There are so many kinds to try from Honeycrisp to Gala that taste amazing with a dash of cinnamon. It also aids in fighting inflammation and upping your antioxidants. (Like you needed another excuse to make apple cinnamon bake.)

Cranberries

There’s nothing bittersweet about glowing skin. The tart taste of cranberries is combated by their sweet benefits for your skin. They’re filled with antioxidants to help fight off free radicals which can quickly age your skin. They also help support the production of collagen, the vital protein your skin needs for elasticity. You get the most benefits from eating cranberries when less sugar is added to your juice, sauce, or plate. We enjoy dehydrating them and putting them on a salad full of greens. They also work wonders in our Smooth and Protect Moisturizer. Like we mentioned before, they are a powerful superfood when it comes to protecting your skin against the harsh winds of fall.

Pumpkin

These bad boys aren’t just for carving! The savory squash tastes divine in pies, loaves of bread, and basically anything the world can come up with (pumpkin spice Peeps, anyone?). Get ready to have even more reasons to pumpkin spice your life when we tell you that actual pumpkin is filled with zinc which is a life-saver for those struggling with acne. It helps control oil production and regulates hormone levels. Pumpkin also has high levels of fruit enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to brighten and refresh your skin. These nutrients are best enjoyed when you use real pumpkin flavors and add a kick of cinnamon and nutmeg to increase moisturization.

Carrots

So, we do have to admit that carrots have two prime seasons and are generally available year round. We included them in our fall list because, in our opinion, they taste best with warm stews and veggie bakes that are enjoyed when the weather turns colder. They are full of antioxidants and Vitamin C to promote elasticity and give you a nice glow. No matter which color you try, they help prevent wrinkles and help the production of collagen for wonderful anti-aging support. We use them in our Gentle Balancing Gel to help fight blemishes and to help create a luminous surface. We recommend chopping up a few up and adding them to a juice with ginger for a nice start to your day.

Sweet Potatoes

It almost feels like you’re cheating and eating a dessert when you try one of these delectable vegetables. Sweet Potatoes are often paired with sugary toppings but can be enjoyed with just a little cinnamon and nutmeg for a healthy treat for your body and skin. A study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people reduced the appearance of wrinkles by 11 percent when they consumed half of a small sweet potato daily for three years. Like carrots, they have plenty of beta-carotene which is converted into Vitamin A in the body. This promotes healthy, supple skin that won’t fade through the ages. So go ahead, yam it up!

We don’t know about you, but we’re getting very hungry now! Fall is our favorite season for baking and cooking some marvelous flavors. Another tip to get maximum enjoyment and health benefits from cooking these ingredients is switching out heavier oils for lighter ones, like coconut and avocado oils. Organic, locally-sourced plants are the best for garnering the most nutrients. Who knew the first step towards healthier skin was going to the Farmer’s Market?
